Excavation is commonly priced by cubic yard, machine hour, day or complete scope rather than simply by acreage. A Simple Cubic-Yard Check
For a rectangular excavation, cubic yards are approximately length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27. That only estimates volume—it does not account for swell, compaction, slopes, trench geometry or how much material must be hauled.
Excavation Cost FAQ
Two sites of the same size can require very different machine hours because soil, rock, access, haul distance, drainage and finish specifications control productivity.
Neither is automatically better. Hourly pricing can make sense for uncertain or small work, while a defined total-scope bid is easier to compare when quantities and finished conditions are clear.
